Intent
Teaching has always been a strong conduit for me to create and shape an environment of collective learning where students can gain knowledge and grow. I am interested in pursuing a professional position at a department that values rigorous instruction. During my time at the University of Georgia, I instructed students in serigraphy, relief, and color theory and 2-D design, which is an integral part of any foundations program. I also aided in the instruction of lithography, intaglio, book arts, letterpress, and digital printmaking, and feel qualified to teach all of these disciplines. Through extensive work alongside fellow instructors, I have gained knowledge that will aid in developing and implementing a comprehensive curriculum and to teach, create in, and maintain a modern studio. The focus of my teaching practice has been to encourage students to create and flourish in a facility that exists as a ground for both technically driven production, as well as exploration of new media and cross-disciplinary practice.
In addition to the aforementioned courses, I am prepared to teach in a variety of capacities including photography and graphic and web design. I am excited at the prospect of working with both graduates and undergraduates at this institution not only to assist in development of expertise in traditional processes, but also to further develop and delve into contemporary and digital processes of making art. I foster critical thinking and conceptual advancements in students through assigned readings, slide presentations, classroom discussions, and written self-evaluations.
Apart from teaching, I am excited to find a position that provides a supportive environment for my research. I am excited to interact with fellow professionals to achieve a higher understanding of my work and appreciation of the work of others.
Both traditional and contemporary printmaking processes, along with a constantly-focused eye for design serve as the hub of my work. The construction and form of a piece work to break out of its boundaries and to establish itself as an object. I use the form of a diptych to explore similarities between dissimilar objects, asking the viewer to question the reasons for such coexistence, evaluate the absurdity of ideas, and form their own opinions about those ideas. My participation in over 15 juried and solo exhibitions throughout the country in the past year ensures my ability to provide insight and relevance to students about contemporary issues and theories, as well as marketing in the current art world.
I possess much curatorial experience from co-founding and co-operating the Chris Young Art Gallery in Central Pennsylvania. Throughout the two years working with the gallery, we featured more than 10 exhibits, all featuring regional artists throughout Pennsylvania and New York. My specific duties included contact with the artists, installing work, and coordinating openings. This opportunity has given me extensive experience in exhibiting art and developing an understanding of professionalism and the salability of artwork.
